Harshana Thilakaratne of Maliyadeva College, Sri Lanka tied for the first place with 7 1/2 points at the Under 8 open event of the World Youth Chess Championships 2011 held from 17th to 27th November in Brazil. Unfortunately, there were 4 players with 7 1/2 points.
He was given a grand felicitation at the Bandaranayake International airport on arrival of him after the event. This was the first time that any Sri Lankan player came to this highest level. Two representatives of the Sports Ministry and the staff of Harshana’s School, Chess Federation officials, his father and his coach were there with almost all the electronic media in Sri Lanka to felicitate him.
